[edit] Info:
What a Waster was the first single released by The Libertines in June 2002, as a double A side along with I Get Along[1]. The track is credited to Peter Doherty and Carl Barat, and was produced by Bernard Butler. In spite of receiving little airplay due to its unyielding profanity[2], the song still made it into the UK Top 40 Singles chart at number 37.
What a Waster was initially left off debut album Up the Bracket, but was later included as the 13th track on a subsequent re-issue, and as track #13 on the American, Australian, and Japanese versions of the CD.
The music video to Don't Look Back Into the Sun features Doherty stealing copies of the What a Waster 7" from a Virgin megastore shop[3]. The song was used in the film The Football Factory[4], and covered by Adam Green both as part as the Babyshambles sessions and as a B-side to his own singles.
Peter Doherty has described "What a Waster" as "the most self-explanatory song in the history of pop."[5] A "waster", as used in the song, is an excessive user of drugs and alcohol.
